In this week’s Current Distractions – Classical music at its rudest and some animals that are marginally more interesting than normal.

Cameron Carpenter gets locked up/swears at photo of self
A couple of weeks ago Cameron Carpenter aka ‘the bad boy of the organ world’ came over from Berlin and got detained at Birmingham airport.  He was told he wasn’t allowed into the country, then stuck in a cell for seven hours, before being escorted by an armed guard onto the first plane back to Germany.  He then had to get on another plane back to the UK and perform in a concert without having slept or rehearsed.  His response was to post this on Facebook with the caption “I got your majesty’s service right here, pal.”

Treating a human like this is wrong.  Unless Birmingham Airport staff did it because they’d seen this video.  In which case it’s totally justified.

Butterflies
The below pictures (from Colossal) show what happens when bilateral gynandromorphism occurs in butterflies.  This is a rare genetic anomaly wherein ‘an animal or insect contains both male and female characteristics, evenly split, right down the middle’.  Check out the results below.  Full article here.

Is classical music sexy?  No?  How about now?
Director Raf Reyntjens thinks that getting scantily clad ladies to dance to Dvořák will encourage people to engage with classical music.  How did he come up with that one? Anyway, three million YouTube users agree with him.
