Afternoon sun

Natasha Stehr, OAE’s Marketing and Press Officer, ventured out of the office on a gloriously sunny Friday for the next Anthem for a Child concert in Hastings.  Here’s what she made of it:

I don’t think I could have picked a better day to leave London for the Sussex Coast…after a 90 minute train ride through the Weald, I arrived at Hastings with the sun beating down on me.  After finding my bearings, I found our venue for the afternoon- St Mary in the Castle, a beautiful Regency building which is used as an Arts Centre.  Most of the players had arrived last night after travelling from Southampton, working with local schools in the morning, and all looked just as energised as when they had set off on the tour- sea air and ice-cream may have helped?!

I sat in the top level of the auditorium and had a prime view of the stage, where the Orchestra were surrounded by hundreds of children, all with their recorders ready to go!  I had heard the concert once before- the first ever Anthem at Kings Place, but I was still absolutely blown away by how the Orchestra and children interacted- all helped by the fabulous presenting by Cherry, Cecelia and James whose enthusiasm was seriously catching.

There were some wonderful moments throughout the concert- my particular favourites included Sue Addison’s seaside anthem on her trombone, the beautiful My Cry anthem and Ken Aiso on violin improvising around the words ‘freezing’, ‘sizzling’ and ‘exotic’, (involving a lot of jumping and wiggling around!) which I managed to capture on video: Ken Aiso dancing

The day finished with a quick ice-cream on the beach watching the sun sparkling over the sea and the tandem setting off back to London.
I love my job…
