Handel Apollo e Dafne

Jonathan Cohen conductor
Katherine Watson soprano
James Newby baritone

Your typical Handel opera has a multitude of characters and runs for more than three hours. With Apollo e Dafne, however, he showed he could also write a short, sharp, enjoyable two-hander.

This forty minutes of pure Handelian fun is drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. When the god Apollo makes fun of Cupid’s archery skills, Cupid takes revenge, shooting him with an arrow that makes him fall in love with Daphne – who’s having none of his advances. But there’s also a serious message to take home – that you can’t have it all your own way in the pursuit of happiness.

Pre-concert talk: 6pm in the QEH Foyer with Crispin Woodhead, OAE Chief Exec.
