The definitive musical celebration of freedom and liberty.
We round off our Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness season with the definitive musical celebration of freedom and liberty.
Even in its own time, Sibelius’ Second Symphony was hailed as a statement against Russian occupation and a proud assertion of Finnish national identity. An extremely powerful piece with a stirring finale, it played its part in paving the way for Finland’s independence in 1917, and helped make Sibelius a national hero.
Thierry Fischer is joined by violinist Alina Ibragimova for a programme also featuring the music of Richard Strauss and Edward Elgar.
Free pre-concert talk – Nationalism in Music: Good, Bad or Euro-Sceptic
6pm, Level Five Function Room
Dr Robert Samuels of our academic partners, the Open University, explores how Sibelius, Strauss and Elgar were in all, in their own way, associated with nationalist movements in their countries.
