BBC Proms 2012

One of the most closely guarded secrets in the classical music world is always what’s going to be on at the BBC Proms, so even though our appearances are planned some way in advance, no one aside from us in the office knows what we are doing until the big Proms announcement and launch. This year that launch took place last week, so we can now safely tell you that this year we’ll make not one but two appearances this year.

First up, on 19 July, is a performance with regular OAE collaborator, director Laurence Cummings, who joins us for Handel’s Oratorio Judas Maccabaeus, with soloists including John Mark Ainsley and Rosemary Joshua. It’s particulary neat that the piece includes ‘See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes!’, the tune of which was reused for Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, of course a staple of the last night of the Proms. More details.

Our second performance comes in the guise of the annual Glyndebourne prom, where, for one night only, the production and cast of Le nozze di Figaro will decamp from Sussex for a trip to the big smoke and a performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Conducted by Robert Ticciati, this sem-staged performance is on 28 August. More details.

We hope you’ll be able to join us at the Royal Albert Hall this summer! Full details of the whole Proms season are available over on their site.

And if you can’t get there – then both will of course be broadcast live on Radio 3.
