Hi, I’m John and I’m Director of Marketing & Audience Development at the OAE (saying all that is a mouthful I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to…)

I first saw OAE at The Night Shift in a crowded room above a pub in Islington in 2011. Jude Law was in the audience – he was on his own, keeping himself to himself – and I remember OAE’s Matt Truscott presenting the show from the stage like the charismatic front man of an indie band. The gig ended with a singalong of Purcell’s bawdy drinking songs. I learnt, as the OAE had promised, that not all orchestras are the same.

Before OAE, I was a theatre journalist and then worked at English Touring Opera, where we showed that, with the right price and the right attitude, you can encourage a wide range of people to attend opera, all over the country. I’m looking forward to continuing that with OAE who, of course, are real leaders at encouraging young people to think differently about classical music.

  • Dear John,

Geoff and I are very much looking forward to Der Freischutz for which we have had tickets since March 2015! I do hope that you are relishing your new role with the OAE.

However, we are absolutely GUTTED that, because of The BBC Proms’ ridiculous policy of keeping their details under wraps until only 2-3 months before the Proms season begins, we will be missing Semiramide in September. April’s Opera Magazine has provided the information under ‘we hear that.., but sadly, we have already booked to be in the USA (Santa Fe opera ) until after the end of the proms season. Had we known about this performance of Semiramide, we would have made different travel plans in order to be at the Prom.

My efforts in the past to alert the BBC to this, have been fruitless. We all need moles who will keep us informed as to the BBC’s plans for the Proms. Maybe you might like to mention this to the powers that be!

    Best wishes, Sarah Roberts
