It’s over. One week and five performances later and our time with the incredible Richard Tognetti has sadly come to a close. But what a week it’s been. Don’t just take our word for it – here are some other voices:

The Guardian’s Rian Evans was there in Cheltenham, and noted the similarity between Tognetti’s approach and the OAE’s:

His combination of apparently laid-back style with tight discipline and sunny demeanor is irresistible, and in this concert with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, his work with them was clearly enlightening in exactly the sense that their ever-questing, ever-questioning ethos seeks to embrace.

David Nice (theartsdesk) was there in London. For him, Tognetti’s ‘extreme flexibility and febrile involvement’ proved an issue:

Here in Sospiri, though, Tognetti was too impetuous, pushing beyond his fellow violinists near the start and not allowing the music to settle to the right introspection.

Both, however, agreed on one thing: the perfection of the encore – the Adagietto from Mahler’s fifth. For Evans, ‘nothing spelled out Tognetti’s inspired let’s-do-it pragmatism better than the evening’s encore… it was captivating for its simplicity and, by the end, an utter stillness.’ And, for Nice, ‘the players caught the idiom to perfection. And though we missed the magical horn call that follows the dying fall, the long silence in the hall at the end spoke different volumes.’
