Mezzo-soprano Sally Bruce-Payne joins us at Kings Place, on 19 April, for Bach Unwrapped: Cantatas and Brandenburg Concertos.  We asked her to take our speed interview, here’s what she had to say.

What do you fear the most?
Probably for the safety and well being of my family. Performing sometimes comes a close second!!

When was your break through moment?
In terms of progression of my career, probably winning the Lady Nixon Award for study as John Eliot Gardiner’s nominee. It allowed me to travel to America to study further and began my interest in the mechanics of the voice.

Which mobile number do you call the most?
My husband

What – or where – is perfection?
Sharing laughter and cuddles with my children

Who is your favourite hero from fiction (book/comic/film/opera) – and why?
Wonder Woman! I’d love to look that good in a large pair of pants and I might  stand a chance of getting everything done in the day! Also Laurel and Hardy because they can make me cry with laughter!

What’s your favourite ritual?
Listening to carols and doing a large jigsaw puzzle with my Children at Christmas.

Which living person do you most admire (and why)?
The Queen for her selfless dedication and extraordinary stamina.

What other talent or skill would you like to possess?
I really enjoy creating things. Sewing, painting and restoring furniture. In another life I would have loved to have been a professional swimmer or dancer!

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
To not be too hard on yourself and enjoy life where ever possible!

What is the most played piece of music on your MP3 player or in your CD collection?
As I’m constantly learning new repertoire, I do a lot of listening around each subject and don’t get to stay with 1 piece for too long. However, I love listening to Yo Yo Ma, Nigel Kennedy, choral music, all voices in general (Anne Sophie Von Otter’s recording of Handel’s Marian Canatas are sublime), Manhatten Transfers, Bing Crosby, Whitney Houston!
