Spinal Chords on the radio

Fri 20 Apr 2012

This Saturday there’s a chance to hear our performance of Sally Beamish’s new work Spinal Chords again, when it is broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now programme. The piece was recorded at it’s Queen Elizabeth Hall performance with narrator Juliet Stevenson reading Melanie Reids’s words and is one of the PRS for Music 20×12 comissions.

Hear and Now goes out tomorrow, 21 April, at 10.45pm on BBC Radio 3. It’s not often that the OAE is featured on a new music programme!

Friday’s encore – plus listen again.

Mon 24 Oct 2011

Horn Shadow

Many of you were asking what the encore was at Friday’s concert with Trevor Pinnock. Well, the answer is a little complicated. It’s a minuet from Haydn’s puppet opera Philemon and Baucis, but was actually written by Karl von Ordonez.

You can read a review of the concert here.

The concert was broadcast live by BBC Radio 3 and you can still listen to it here (first half) and here (second half) until this Friday (28 Oct).

Lunchtime with the OAE

Wed 4 May 2011

St George's concert hall, Bristol - venue for our lunchtime concerts

One of the recurring fixtures in the OAE’s diary is our annual series of lunchtime concerts at St George’s, Bristol, one of our most regular venues out of London.

There are usually four lunchtime concerts in the series, given by the soloists of the Orchestra, which then go on to be broadcast by BBC Radio 3, and are also often performed elsewhere too – for example as part of our recent Baroque. Contrasted. festival at Kings Place. Indeed, if you scroll down to our April postings you’ll find some info on the composers featured – one example here.

The most recent set of these concerts is being broadcast this week by BBC Radio 3, and the music includes pieces by well known Baroque names such as Bach and Handel, alongside some real rarities. Of course, though they’re broadcast at lunchtime, through the BBC’s Listen Again feature you can listen anytime within a week after the broadcast date.

The BBC also produced a short film to accompany the concerts which features rehearsal footage plus interviews with musicians Margaret Faultless (violin) and Steven Devine (keyboard)

The programmes are being broadcast at 1pm Tuesday to Friday this week, and you can listen to them on the links below:

Tuesday – Refelctions on the Grand Tour – music for Cornetts and Sackbuts
Wednesday – Bach, Handel and Purcell – Wind soloists of the OAE
Thursday – Vivaldi and Corelli – String soloists of the OAE
Friday – Handel, Vivaldi and Coreli – Wind and String soloists of the OAE

Christmas and New Year with the OAE

Tue 21 Dec 2010

Christmas and New Year just wouldn’t be the same with our favourite orchestra, would it? Well, we’re pleased  to say that whether you’re in London or not, you’ll be able to enjoy our music making in the coming couple of weeks. First off there’s a chance on Christmas Eve to hear us on BBC2, playing in Glyndebourne’s 2010 production of Don Giovanni. Vladimir Jurowski, one of our Principal Artists, conducts. The performance goes out at 2.45 on 24th December, and you can find out more about the production over on the Glyndebourne website.

Next up there are two opportunities to hear us at Kings Place giving an all Mozart programme on 31 Dec (at 6pm) and 1 Jan (at 1pm). The 1 January concert will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, kicking off their Genius of Mozart Season.

We hope you can join us in person or via TV or radio this festive season!
