Why Friday the 13th wont be so bad after all: a new Night Shift podcast

Wed 11 Aug 2010

Ahead of our special summer event at Wilton’s this Friday (the 13th) we’ve just released this new podcast which looks forward to the event. In it, we find out about the history of the venue – and why the can-can was banned, chat with OAE leader and violinist Matthew Truscott (who was in a rather windy Glyndebourne) about the music and get your reactions to the last event back in May. Find out more about The Night Shift and how to buy tickets at its special website. This podcast also features our Pod Idol winner Raul – making his debut as the voice of the pod.

Matthew Truscott on Wilton's

Wed 14 Jul 2010

The other week we were preparing a press release about our forthcoming Night Shift at Wilton’s Music Hall, and we asked OAE leader and

director of this performance, Matthew Truscott for a quote to go on the release. We really loved his description of the venue so thought we’d share it with you here. We’ll post some pics of the venue  here tomorrow.

“Wilton’s is a wonderful and lavishly evocative venue where the walls are imbued with the sweat and cheers of generations of Londoners. It’s perfect for The Night Shift and especially for this one where we’ll be playing music written for a London audience. Handel composed his magnificent set of Concerti Grossi down the road on Brook Street and Purcell’s Fairy Queen has in it some of England’s most vivid and sensual theatre music”

In the Green Room: Karen Robinson pics, part 1

Thu 17 Jun 2010

A while back, photographer Karen Robinson was commissioned by Southbank Centre to take pictures of the Resident Orchestras and their major artists, with a view to using the images for the Southbank Centre’s 2010-2011 Classical Music Season. You may well have already seen the photographs in the Southbank’s Classical Music Guide. As part of the project, Karen spent a day with the OAE as we rehearsed and performed Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The results are fantastic, and a wonderful glimpse into what happens backstage at a concert. Here’s an initial selection (from the afternoon rehearsal), and more will follow.

Classical music. The last bastion of uncool?

Fri 22 Jan 2010

This is the question posed by Notion magazine in their latest issue, going on to say:

” Nothing is uncool anymore, I know becaus Brian Eno said so recently…Cool itself is rather passé. There is, however, one exception, the impregnable bastion of uncool: Classical music.

It’s fair to say that Notion isn’t usually the kind of magazine that the OAE appears in, which in a way is why we’re especially excited to be featured. The article (which features yours truly, and more importantly OAE Leaders Maggie Faultless and Matthew Truscott) asks why classical music hasn’t become ‘cool’ like Contemporary Art or Theatre, and takes a look at our Night Shift series of concerts. You can read the article online here – just go to page 56 of the magazine.

The Night Shift makes its debut appearance at the Roundhouse in Camden on 29 January – details here and tickets here.
