So it might not be a particularly inspiring setting – it is, after all, Stockwell. But look at this place on street view and you’ll see a sweet little pub with bunting outside and a banner advertising ‘South Lambeth Market’. The Cavendish Arms describe themselves as an ‘arts’ pub, Stockwell’s hidden gem. It’s cute.Read More
One of the best things about the Night Shift (apart from the music) is that it always takes place in a unique and interesting venue. So, in the run-up to our grand tour of England, we’ve decided to delve a little deeper into these amazing places. First up, our Newcastle venue, the Cumberland Arms.Read More

It’s been just under a week since our mini Night Shift at The Amersham Arms so we thought we’d share some pics from the night with you to refresh your memories.
We returned to the cosy pub on a warm spring evening for an ice-cold beer and some brilliant music, courtesy of our OAE trio: Ken Aiso, Jonathan Rees and David Gordon.Read More
On 23 April, the OAE return to the warm ambience of The Amersham Arms for another pub edition of The Night Shift. We’ll be crushing the rules of classical music like a handful of crisps for a classical event where audiences can drink, chat and clap when they want.
Featuring baroque A-Listers Handel, Purcell and Biber, it’s a rare opportunity to hear some of the world’s greatest composers, played by top performers, in a relaxed pub atmosphere. Presented by James Redwood, our musicians will also be improvising a new piece inspired by the music of the evening. There’ll even be a few drinking songs to finish the night off. Watch the trailer above for a taster of what the night will involve…

We know its been a bit quiet on the Night Shift front of late, so we thought we’d give you a quick update on pub tour progress. We know it sounds easy to put on a few gigs in pubs but there’s a fair amount of organising that has to go on. First thing is that players have to be booked. They’re busy people, working not just with us but also teaching and also playing in other orchestras. We think we’re just about sorted now, and the line up should look pretty similar to the last one…that means we have also sorted out (almost!) the dates for the pub tour, with things most likely to kick off right at the end of January.
Then, Ceri and I have had the task of checking out pubs. I can hear you all saying ‘oh how terrible for you’, but it’s actually been really tiring schlepping across London to look at various pubs and bars. The other week we saw about 14 in just two afternoons! We reckon we’re pretty much sorted for North and East London but we’re still looking at venues in South, Central and West London. Suggestions always welcome…
Oh yeah and the music. Thats sorted too. We’re having two different programmes, both of which are different to our gig back in September.
If everything goes to plan we’ll be posting full details of the tour in mid December…exciting stuff! And if anyone wants to get involved and help us promote these shows then please do drop us a line.

As you may have seen, over the past month we have been busy raising funds to put on a whole tour of Night Shift’s in pubs, following on from the success of our initial event in September. Well, we had a flood of donations in the closing days of the campaign and were thrilled not just to meet our target, but to smash through it with £1,255 raised overall. We were thrilled with everyone’s generosity and enthusiasm, and with over 50 donors it really did prove the concept of Crowdfunding – a lot of small donations making a BIG difference. Thank you!
So we’re now proceeding with planning the tour, pinning down dates with musicians and scoping out pubs. We’d love to hear from you with any venue suggestions. We’re looking for pubs that have a space suitable for live music and which can hold 150+ people. If you have any ideas then drop us a line. We hope to announce dates and venues in early 2012, if not before.Read More
Our September podcast is a packed edition – we look back at the hot, sweaty and beery pub gig back in September, talking to punters, musicians and staff and asking how the experience was for them. We fill you in on how YOU can help more pub gigs happen and we also talk to pianist Robert Levin who featured in our 29 September event. Enjoy!

There are two weeks to go until our first ever Night-Shift-in-a-pub on 8 September. Here’s a little video preview. If you watch it and are subsequently desperate to buy tickets you can do that here. By the way, does anyone know what the background music is? It’s insanely catchy…Read More
Next month we’re trying something a little different and taking our late-night series, The Night Shift to everyone’s favourite place – the pub.
It’s an idea we’ve bandied around for a little while here in the OAE office, but recently we decided to JFDI, as we say in our strange office lingo. (Just Flipping Do It)…
The idea is simple, downsize the Night Shift and perform in a pub. We love the idea of it being a super-intimate event with the audience being really close to performers, and being in a pub, standing, with a pint in hand, should work well with the whole Night Shift informality thing. Plus our Night Shift audience is always telling us they want more regular events – so this is a handy way of having events in between the main shows.Read More
