In rehearsal: Sir Roger Norrington conducts Berlioz

Wed 13 Aug 2014

Berlioz Video

Last autumn we went on tour with our Emeritus Conductor Sir Roger Norrington, with some pretty unusual repertoire for us – Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.  Indeed, this was only the second time we have ever programmed this piece.  Here’s a clip of the Orchestra and Sir Roger Norrington rehearsing the piece at the Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels ahead of performances there, and in Warsaw and Helsinki.

Boyce’s Solomon – in rehearsal

Tue 10 Jun 2014

A peek behind the scenes during rehearsals for Boyce’s Solomon – a Serenata.
Wildly popular in its day, Boyce’s Solomon even eclipsed Handel’s Messiah in the popularity stakes. However…it’s libretto was perhaps slightly racy and it fell foul of later, more prudish, tastes.

Romeo & Juliet in rehearsal

Thu 5 Apr 2012

Taken us a while to put these up…but cast your mind back about 2 months and we were playing Berlioz’s huge Romeo & Juliet. Here are some pictures of us in rehearsal with OAE Principal Artist Sir Mark Elder at the Royal Festival Hall, on the morning of our evening performance there ( inbetween the Philharmonia gave a family concert, it was quite a busy day for the Festival Hall!). All pictures are by Joe Plommer and you can view the entire set over on our Flickr profile.

Messiah in rehearsal

Tue 20 Dec 2011

Here’s a clip we posted online on Facebook a little while back but it’s only just made it onto our website, we’ve had such a backlog of things to blog about! Anyway, it’s some rather rough and ready footage from the rehearsal of Handel’s Messiah, which we performed at the Royal Festival Hall a few weeks ago, which which we recently also took to Utrecht. We hope you’ll excuse the rather basic camerawork – oh and yes, the Trumpet player IS allowed to be reading the paper, he’s probably not got anything to play for a while!

If you live in Paris there’s still a chance to catch our Messiah as we perform it there on Thursday 23 December.

In rehearsal with Roy Goodman and Robin Ticciati

Wed 11 May 2011

with Roy Goodman and pianist Artur Pizarro

A few pictures snapped by our Intern Georgina of the OAE in rehearsal last week with two conductors – Roy Goodman rehearsing us at the Queen Elizabeth Hall for that evening’s performance of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and Robin Ticciati at the helm in rehearsal for Glyndebourne’s Don Giovanni.

There's nothing interesting happening today

Wed 27 Apr 2011

At lunchtime today my colleague Megan produced 10 metres of hand-made bunting from her bag (as you do). We were all pretty impressed with it and immediately started to put it up in the office. While we were doing this my colleague Zen starting filming and taking pictures – I remarked that it would be great to get some pictures for the blog as ‘there’s nothing else interesting going on today to put on there’. At this point Megan remarked to me that in fact there was a 50 piece orchestra rehearsing two floors below us and that was maybe quite interesting.

Of course she’s right.  Its amazing how quickly something like that becomes routine and ordinary, and you have to be reminded how special it is. After lunch I took the escalator down to level -2 here at Kings Place to listen to the Orchestra, conductor Roy Goodman and pianist Artur Pizzaro rehearse Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto. Lovely as Megan’s bunting is, listening to the OAE play Beethoven is always going to trump most things. Here are pics of both bunting and rehearsal.

In the Green Room: Karen Robinson pics, part 1

Thu 17 Jun 2010

A while back, photographer Karen Robinson was commissioned by Southbank Centre to take pictures of the Resident Orchestras and their major artists, with a view to using the images for the Southbank Centre’s 2010-2011 Classical Music Season. You may well have already seen the photographs in the Southbank’s Classical Music Guide. As part of the project, Karen spent a day with the OAE as we rehearsed and performed Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The results are fantastic, and a wonderful glimpse into what happens backstage at a concert. Here’s an initial selection (from the afternoon rehearsal), and more will follow.

Here’s a photogallery from our 2 days in Spain, thanks to Megan for being our resident paparazzi! Yesterday the OAE flew back to the UK for a days break and today they are off to Birmingham for a concert in the fabulous acoustic of Symphony Hall. Then tomorrow they fly to Germany for the final leg of the tour.

Some slightly fuzzzy heads in the OAE office today – we had our office warming and Christmas party last night. Pics to follow soon!

Vladimir drops by…

Wed 10 Dec 2008

We had a surprise visitor at our afternoon rehearsal yesterday at the Royal Festival Hall, when Principal Artist Vladimir Jurowski dropped by. He’d been rehearsing with the LPO in the morning so stayed on for our rehearsal with Sir Simon Rattle in the afternoon. Projects Manager Ceri Jones managed to get a quick pic on her phone (hence the quality!) of the two of them in conversation. Some of you may remember that about 2 years ago Vladimir conducted Schumann’s Symphony No.3, Rhenish with us, so maybe he was comparing notes with Simon.

The Orchestra has had a day off today and then we’re off to Brussels tomorrow on the 09.57 from St Pancras, look out for tour reports coming soon.

Rattle in Rehearsal

Fri 5 Dec 2008

Lots of excitement today here at our HQ, Kings Place, as we had our first rehearsals for our concerts with Sir Simon Rattle next week.

The ‘Schumann’ project has been on schedules for years now – certainly ever since I started here 4 years ago, so its exciting to hear it come to fruition. I sat in the rehearsal for the first thirty minutes, and even on a first run though it sounded pretty damn exciting – I got the ‘tingle’ factor! I was wondering while I sat there why Schumann’s symphonies aren’t better known – they started with the second symphony and it’s really good stuff, very stirring.

I managed to snatch a few pics before they started rehearsing – not that great quality i’m afraid, but I’ll try and get some more at the evening rehearsal. Don’t forget to check back here for more news during the tour.

If you’re curious to find out what the Schumann symphonies sound like you can here soundclips here and here.
