JS Bach BWV 155 Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange

Dr Sam Cohen, Associate Professor in the Mathematical Institute at Oxford

In this cantata of longing, Bach deploys an array of instruments including the bassoon and the voice to articulate deep emotion, anguish, suffering, loss and glimpses of illusory joy.

In this talk we reflect on our personal ambitions and ask ‘how can I be sure that tomorrow’s decisions will satisfy today’s objectives?’ Using predictive models and statistical analysis, Dr Sam Cohen challenges the notion of free will and control to see if we really can ‘choose our own adventure’.
