Luther translated psalm 130 ‘de Profundis’ as one of the first (possibly the first) to make it accessible to Protestant church goers. In tonight’s programme we hear the Latin setting in the first half and the German in the second. When Luther transported the language of faith into the vernacular, he energized the reformation movement with an intellectual emancipation that underpins the Enlightenment in its free-thinking challenge to conventional doctrine and authority.
