One of the most iconic pieces of classical music, Bach’s St Matthew Passion retains its huge emotional impact even 300 years on from its premiere.
An unsentimental depiction of the Easter story, it is immediate in its power, but yields new riches after years of exploration.
Performed on period instruments to reveal the original colours and textures of the music, it is here sung by a top-drawer cast, including soprano Mary Bevan, Paula Murrihy and tenor Mark Padmore in the role of the Evangelist, as well as directing the Orchestra.
