Christmas Oratorio in Hamburg

Our collaboration with Masaaki Suzuki on JS Bach's Christmas masterpiece heads to the magnificent Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
Hamburg, Elbphilharmonie €12 - €105 More Info

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) was originally composed to be performed in Leipzig’s two main churches – St Thomas and St Nicholas – over six feast days during the Christmas period.  In tonight’s programme we perform Parts 1, 2 and 3 with a cast of soloists featuring some of the most dynamic rising stars of the UK’s historical performance scene.

Composed for Christmas Day itself, drums and bright flutes herald the birth of Jesus in Part 1. In Part 2, as news reaches the shepherds, we find Bach in devotional, pastoral mode, whilst Part 3 abounds with the simple joy of their adoration of the young child.  The programme also includes Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (BWV 225).

Performers:

Madison Nonoa soprano
Hugh Cutting countertenor
Guy Cutting tenor
Florian Störtz bass-baritone
Masaaki Suzuki conductor
Choir of the Age of Enlightenment
