Keep on track with the clarinets following Mozart’s World: A Little Night Music, as Katherine and Sarah share all on their clarinets, musical life and experiences with the OAE.

Tucked away in St Luke’s, meet Katherine (Principle Clarinet) and Sarah (Sub-Principal Clarinet) for a morning filled with humorous tales of past performances, detailed discussion on their specially crafted clarinets used in OAE concerts and even a little morning music.

Katherine Spencer, Principal Clarinet

Katherine studied at the Royal Academy of Music and was introduced to Baroque music when she witnessed a performance by Anthony Pay, the former Principal Clarinet of the OAE. In this session, Katherine will be showcasing her latest basset clarinet, named ‘Grace,’ which was featured in Enlightenment 2025 and inspired by Stadler’s own basset clarinet.

Her first engagement with the OAE took place at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2002, where she played in Così fan tutte, and she later became a member of the orchestra in 2010.

Sarah Thurlow, Sub-Principal Clarinet

Sarah studied at the Royal College of Music in 1992, where she was introduced to historical clarinets during a talk with clarinettist Michael Harris. During her time at the college, Sarah was loaned funds to purchase her first clarinet, a copy of the Simiot clarinet made by Daniel Bangham, which she still owns today along with an original Simeot. Both of these clarinets will be the topic of discussion in our session.

Sarah’s first engagement with the OAE was in 2000, in a session called Mozart Arias with Natalie Dessay at Air Lyndhurst Studio. Sarah become a member of the OAE in 2023.
