Mozart’s friendship with the Stadler brothers, Anton and Johann, led to many inn-based exploits, but in between nights out it also accelerated the development of the emerging clarinet.
Spend an evening in the pub with Sarah Thurlow and team, as we explore how even in its early development the clarinet provided composers with a huge range of tone colours to exploit. Mozart famously wrote both the Clarinet Concerto and Quintet for Anton, but in tonight’s gig we’ll be getting up close with pieces composed for various combinations of clarinets and basset horns. Including Mozart’s Divertimento No. 2 (K.439b) for three basset horns and Stadler’s own Terzetti for basset horns. Plus some a medley from The Marriage of Figaro that showcases the whole range.
