Could the fortepiano being played in our Das Jahr concert once have belonged to Felix Mendelssohn?*
The piano was originally built in London in 1832 by the French firm of Erard. Its founder, Sebastien Erard, was one of the most significant innovators in the history of the piano who in 1821 patented the ingenious ‘double escapement’ action that forms the basis of the modern design. This allows the pianist to rapidly repeat notes without the keys having to return to their point of rest – a feature which had a huge impact on Romantic and all later piano repertoire.
