Watch Breaking Bach's journey to the Edinburgh International Festival in a full-length film featuring performances from the show and behind-the-scenes insights.

Part performance and part rehearsal room story created in collaboration with Marquee TV, the film follows the ensemble of young street dancers — including students from our home at Acland Burghley School — the musicians of the OAE and choreographer Kim Brandstrup as they navigate the friction — and excitement — between structure and freedom. Dancers and musicians work side-by-side, trading ideas as they navigate technical puzzles, timing challenges, and the sheer physical demand of fusing two art forms with centuries between them. There are moments of breakthrough, when a bass line unlocks a new groove, and moments when everything needs to be pulled apart and tried again.

What emerges is a production that celebrates the dancers’ rhythmic intelligence and the raw, kinetic force in Bach’s writing. His orchestral works, shaped by Baroque dance yet bursting with speed and improvisational fire, meet the physical language of hip hop in a way that feels immediate, surprising, and utterly alive.
