Join OAE violist Martin Kelly for an exclusive behind-the-scenes exploration of historic instruments at the V&A East Storehouse.

Enjoy a private and illuminating musical tour led by Martin, an OAE player since 1986/87, as he introduces five remarkable instruments he has personally selected for this visit. See up close a 17th-century Italian double bass, a viola d’amore, and an English recorder.

Opened to the public in May 2025, the V&A East Storehouse houses more than 250,000 artefacts not currently on display, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore these treasures up close and behind the scenes. Find out more about the V&A East Storehouse here: V&A East Storehouse.

Martin Kelly

Martin studied at the Royal College of Music, London where he was introduced to playing Baroque. Afterwards Martin moved to the US to continue his postgraduate studies, later becoming Assistant Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Ohio State University. Returning to the UK in 1983, Martin began playing for chamber orchestras and gradually became more involved in historically informed performance. His first concert with the OAE was in 1986/87.
