As Elgar dedicated his work “to my friends pictured within”, join the OAE’s friends and supporters at the final Open Rehearsal of the Season.
The Orchestra is joined by conductor Dinis Sousa as they deliver one of the greatest pieces of the 19th century and a century-old puzzle, Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
Described by Elgar himself as a work “commenced in a spirit of humour & continued in deep seriousness”, Enigma Variations conveys an event, a person, a moment and the series of 14 portraits demonstrates how a character can change in a mere few notes.
Sea Pictures, composed the summer after Enigma Variations, echoes the waves of Victorian affection for the
English seaside and the five songs are performed by our own Rising Star of the Enlightenment, mezzo-soprano Frances Gregory.
