Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, and lived from 1770 to 1827.
His nine symphonies are known for revolutionising music, bridging the gap between the structured compositions of the Classical period and the more explosive, expressive music of the Romantic era. From around the middle of his life, Beethoven started to lose his hearing but composed many of his famous works from this point onwards.
