The St Matthew Passion was first performed in 1727. Bach was a deeply spiritual person, and in this piece he combines the retelling of the final hours of Jesus’ life with more contemplative numbers for the solo singers. It has often been described as some of the most beautiful, heartfelt music ever written.
In this open rehearsal you will have the opportunity to hear the OAE and conductor Jonathan Cohen rehearsing for our performance at the Southbank Centre on 3 April. The Orchestra will be joined by a cast of six solo singers and a large choir – you may also get to hear some incredible solos from the OAE’s players.
Our Community Open Rehearsals are open to everyone. They take place at Acland Burghley School in Tufnell Park, where the OAE is based – the nearest tube station is Tufnell Park on the Northern Line (usually less than 10 minutes from Euston or King’s Cross). We’d like anyone to feel able and comfortable to attend these events. We’re always happy to answer any questions you have – please email us if we can help.
It’s free to attend – but please register so we know how much tea to make!
