The Night Shift at The George Tavern

Strike the viol! Be transported back in time with an evening of music for two viols and theorbo at our favourite east London establishment.
Shadwell, The George Tavern £13 suggested price - or 'pay what you choose' (from £7 minimum) Book Now

The viol was once the most fashionable instrument in Europe, its luscious sound defining the soundtrack of the 17th and 18th Centuries. Tonight’s sets will include English, Scottish and French music including by Christopher Simpson, the leading English exponent of the instrument, and its greatest master, Marin Marais.

This gig is curated by Jonathan Manson, who as well as being our principal cellist is one of the world’s leading viol players. He is joined by the fantastic Lucine Musaelian and Elizabeth Kenny, for two sets featuring two viols and theorbo. In addition to Simpson and Marais, there’ll be music by Matthew Locke, Tobias Hume, the Monsieur de Saint-Colombe and Robert de Visée.

Find out more about the instrument and hear Jonathan playing it in our video Introducing the viola da gamba below

The Night Shift is our series of informal chamber music gigs – literally music for smaller rooms, in the home or other places where people socialise.  They’re a chance to hear the members of the OAE playing music that they’re passionate about and bringing in a wide range of musical influences. So come along, grab a drink with friends (or meet some new ones) and enjoy the music.

There are two ticket price choices for The Night Shift. Our suggested price is £13 or you can ‘pay what you choose’ by entering your own amount (with a £7 minimum up to as much as you like!).
